Access to the Reserve

As from September 2001, members will again be able to take cars onto the site.  At the Apperley Lane end of the site, there is an intercom at the gate that rings through to security at Buttershaw.  BOG has negotiated this access on the proviso that you state who you are, your car registration number and that you are a BOG member.

Due to the location of the Reserve, access is limited to members of Bradford Ornithological Group only and Membership Cards must be shown on request to the Warden or other Group officials.

To join, please visit the membership page on the B.O.G. website for further details by clicking on the link below:

The following Terms and Conditions of access were agreed with Yorkshire Water in 1997 and are as published in the winter 1997 edition of Lapwing.

  1. Identification as being a bona-fide member of BOG is to be carried at all times when on the works.  If not such identification is produced upon request, that person will be asked to leave the Works.  Non-members are not allowed onto the Works.
  2. All due care for one’s personal safety must be exercised at all times whiles on the works.  Members must keep away from and not interfere with any apparatus belonging to the Works.
  3. Members must keep to tarmac roads and paths at all times.  No access is permitted to any fenced area or the lagoon area to the northwest of the offices and situated between the river and the tanks alongside the access road from Esholt village.
  4. As a safety measure, visits to the Works must be in the company of at least one other member of BOG (of course, this applies if for any reason any members leave the paths or tracks at any time).
  5. Official permitted access to the Works will be from the Apperley Lane entrance only, and vehicles must be parked in the car park in front of the offices (Ainsbury house).
  6. Any members visiting the Works must report to the Control Room on arrival and sign the logbook, noting the time of their arrival and also ensuring that their vehicle registration number is recorded.  They must report again when leaving the Works, noting the time of their departure in the logbook.  Please also record any interesting records from your visit.
  7. There are a number of private residents on the Works site, whose privacy must be respected at all times; naturally, the grounds of these residents are to be regarded as strictly out of bounds at all times.
  8. Members observing any trespass, or anything otherwise amiss or suspicious are requested to report the matter to the Control Room, giving as much detail as possible.
